How Percentage Change Calculator calculates the result

Percentage change = (new value − original value) ÷ |original value| × 100. A positive answer indicates an increase on the signed number line. The original value must not be zero.

Example

Changing from 100 to 125 produces a 25% increase. Changing from 100 to 80 produces −20%.

What to know

The original value cannot be zero. The denominator uses its absolute magnitude so the result keeps the signed direction even for negative original values.
